This program comes from the last anniversary celebration the shul ever celebrated. I was stunned to discover it in the scrapbooks Heiman Jacobson and his wife Sarah put together of a wide range of pictures and ephemera from their lives. It represents a unique opportunity to see how the community reflects on the realization that its best days are behind it:
Changes which have marked the national and international scene have likewise left their mark on the Congregation. Population shifts have occurred all over the United States, and in Homestead the Jewish community likewise has diminished in size and number.
Despite the diminution of the Jewish population, we have maintained our Synagogue building and, to some extent, have improved it so today it is more beautiful and more utilitarian than ever before. We have added to our physical assets with the purchase of the home immediately next to our Synagogue for the Rabbi’s residence.
It is our hope that, although in numbers we may have suffered, the flame and spirit of the Congregation and the Sisterhood will continue to live and prosper.
